Anyone who has diabetes and has tried to secure individual health insurance can tell you that diabetes is a costly and difficult disease to have. This disease can be very quiet in its beginning stages. In fact, fifty percent of the people who are pre-diabetics, blood sugars over 110, yet below 126, are not even aware that they have this disease. The only way to accurately determine diabetes is through a fasting blood glucose test.
The best news is: you can do your part now to prevent type II diabetes!!! You can be in control of this disease!!! Even if you have diabetes you can implement some of these suggestions to decrease the severity of your diabetic symptoms.
1. Eat according to your nutritional type. You may be a protein type and eating way too many carbohydrates (sugars) with a high glycemic index (a fast burning sugar). Or you may be a carbohydrate type eating the wrong types of sugars. In any event, choose your sugars with a low glycemic index to decrease the effect on your blood glucose. Also, eat foods that are rich in omega 3 oils like olive oil and salmon.
2. Get moving. Exercise works by increasing the sensitivity of insulin receptors so the insulin that is present works much more effectively, and your body doesn't need to produce as much. (Diabetics with blood sugars over 170 mg/dl need to use extra caution and medical supervision for their exercise program, because elevated blood sugars may rise further with exercise.)
3. Get plenty of rest and reduce your stress. Too much stress and too little sleep can trigger chemicals in your blood to change insulin production.
Remember you are in control of this disease if you take the right precautions to prevent it!
