Fats and Oils

Which Oil Is Best?

Last Did You Know I talked about toxins and what we need to do with them. Well one of the ways you increase the levels of toxins in your body is by consuming the incorrect types of fats and oils. The news is exploding with stories about transfat and saturated fat and how risky they can be to your health. However, the media doesn’t always tell the whole story and leaves out which fats are actually good to cook with.

Many of you probably cook with canola oil, vegetable oil, or even olive oil, but I want to let you know that these oils may not be the best to cook with. Believe it or not, heating oils (almost all oils) actually starts to turn the oil into a partially hydrogenated oil. In other words, when you cook with almost all oils you are actually cooking with a trans fat. What do you do to avoid that attack on your arteries, your heart and your health?

Make the change to cooking with coconut oil. Coconut oil is one of the most stable oils you can buy and it doesn’t turn rancid easily. It doesn’t even leave a coconut taste in your food since it is essentially tasteless. So why don’t we know more about coconut oil and its benefits? Different associations and companies attacked coconut oil and said that saturated fats caused heart disease, and since coconut oil was saturated, it too caused heart disease. There were lots of assumptions, accusations, and claims, but no tests. The poor countries exporting coconuts couldn’t fight the large American food industries, and soon partially hydrogenated soybean oil and corn oil was in everything.

Coconut oil is now making a comeback. You can check out many different places to buy this oil on the internet or you can purchase it in most local food and Wal-Mart stores (usually found with the health food). Since coconut oil has a melting point of 76 degrees, you may find it in liquid form in a jar or it may be white. Sometimes you can almost see it change right before your eyes. Find out the information you need to make your best decision to which oil is really best for your health.
