I’m sure you heard of the weekend warrior, those individuals (maybe you) who go out on the weekend and play all types of sports, like football or basketball, with their friends in the backyard. However, have your heard of the periodic health nut? They go like crazy trying to do everything in their power to get “healthy” and then they lose interest in a week or two?
The periodic health nut gets it in their mind when they are in their “nut” phase that they know all about health. But doesn’t it just drive you crazy when you know that they’ll be off their “kick” soon and just as unhealthy as before? Comparing the periodic health nut to a true healthy person is similar to comparing someone who bench presses 350lbs once to an Olympic athlete.
The point I am trying to make is health is not a goal to be achieved once. Health is a goal to continue with and maintain. You don’t “arrive” at health; you travel down the path of health. When you travel down the path of health long enough it becomes your lifestyle and all the choices about health become easy, second nature, effortless. Sounds good doesn’t it?
If you are one of those periodic health nuts there is hope for you. Realize that your drive needs to be on feeling better from deep within and not on “getting healthy”. Learn the best exercise program for you and don’t go with the latest fad or join the most popular gym. Find out, sometimes through trial and error, what the best foods are for you to eat. Most importantly realize that if you mess up and eat or do something unhealthy, you can get back on that path to health with just a little bit of effort!
Tips on lifestyle changes!
Don’t get caught up in the details. Focus on the big picture. This way if you get a little off track, you’ll see it is easy to get back on track.
Don’t punish yourself if you slip up some. Get back on track and get going.
Realize that once you are on that path of health a slip up can be considered a “splurge”, but if you keep wavering off of the path then the slip up is a slip up.
Find out if living a healthy lifestyle is something you TRULY want. If you don’t really want it then you’re not going to work hard at it and every little step off the path is going to feel detrimental until you give up.
