Go With The Flow

What do you think is the greatest transportation system in the whole world? I’ll assure you it is not MARTA or the interstate highways, even though they are quite beneficial, but you actually carry around this amazing system with you everywhere you go. After all, the most amazing transportation system in the world is our circulatory system made up primarily of our blood, heart, and all the blood vessels.

The number of things our blood transports to a seemingly infinite number of stops is incredible, not to mention efficient. As you may know, your blood is responsible for bringing oxygen and digested food to all the cells of your body. If that isn’t enough, your blood also brings cellular waste to the organ that will best break that waste down for elimination from the body. On top of all of that, your blood provides the way for your body’s army (the white blood cells) to move about and attack invading organisms. Did I mention the self repair, called clotting, your blood supplies through the platelets it will bring to any openings in the vessels?

Blood is also the medium through which hormones and other bodily produced chemicals move. These chemicals allow for some communication between your organs to allow the body to function as a whole unit.

This brings us to how all of these things get into our blood. Many of the items that are being continuously transported in your blood are produced by the body itself. However, we need to be careful of the things that go into our blood that the body doesn’t produce. What we eat might ultimately wind up traveling around in our circulatory system so make sure anything that goes into your mouth is worth going into your all important blood stream. Also, what you put on your skin goes into your blood stream directly without any filters to sort out harmful or dangerous chemicals. Be certain that what is placed on your skin will be alright going through your blood and possible to every cell and organ in your body.

Your circulatory system is amazing. Do the right things to keep it healthy and it will serve you well, in turn.

Ways to keep that all important transportation system working at its best!

Exercise: Exercise provides your heart the ability to pump more blood with every beat and sustain its maximum level with less strain. Blood circulating at a quicker pace can allow the circulatory system to be more efficient.

Water: Our blood is almost 85% water. When we don’t drink enough fluids our body maintains blood pressure by closing off small capillaries cutting those cells off from vital nutrients.

Food intake: When we consume excessive and unhealthy fats and sugars, our blood can become overloaded with these nutrients and the chemicals needed to process them correctly. Eat items with soluble fiber, like fruits, vegetables and whole grains, to help keep your circulatory system open since the soluble fiber acts like little brooms sweeping out the things stuck in the crevices of your vessels.
