Get ready to quit…
Review your past attempts to quit and figure out what worked and what didn’t.
Decide how you will handle cravings and others influencing you it will be too difficult to quit.
Get support and encouragement…
Ask for support up front when you let people know you are quitting. It is a difficult task that can be accomplished and you don’t have to go it alone.
Learn new skills and behaviors…
Change your daily routine so you aren’t so inclined to reach for a cigarette… take a different route to work or shower before you eat in the morning. Even drinking tea instead of coffee can help.
Learn a hobby to keep your mind off of the cigarettes.
If nothing else works, ask for the medication…
Of course I don’t normally advocate medications, but in this case it is definitely the lesser of two evils. I know many people who quit with the assistance of the patch and have never picked up another cigarette!
Be prepared for difficult situations…
Eat healthy, stay active and drink plenty of water so you can better deal with stress that will come your way. Remember, the coping you are used to, the cigarettes, are no longer available so keep yourself healthy to deal with the bumps in the road.
Remember… quitting smoking can be very difficult, but you can do it!!!
