Our society is so filled of “keep busy” and “go, go, go” that we don’t take the time to “do nothing”. Now, I’m not talking about watching television and vegging out for hours on end, but I am talking about doing nothing. Sitting on your favorite chair and just letting your mind go can actually be good for you. If you don’t believe me think of that proverbial wise man on the top of the hill. He is always just sitting there looking out into space. I’ve never seen a television near him!
If you are having difficulty “doing nothing” and you find yourself squirming and fidgeting, you may have things going on in your mind that you might not want to confront. GREAT! Now you can get yourself a journal and write down everything that comes to your mind no matter what it is. Don’t worry about what you write down, how private it is or how much you write because after you write it down you can shred it! Just make sure that you wrote down EVERYTHING! Then your mind will be able to relax and you should be able to sit there without all the squirming. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel after this exercise.
After you do the “write it down” exercise a few times, you’ll be able to just sit down and relax so your brain can just think. There won’t be complete overwhelm with a million things buzzing around and you’ll be able to process all of those thoughts that come to you. Frequent periods of “doing nothing” can really help your mental attitude.
Just think in terms of water. Consuming water is vital to our existence. But what really is water? It is close to “nothing” with only hydrogen and oxygen atoms. No calories, no fat, no vitamins, no sugars, etc. So our body needs “nothing” on a regular basis!
