We have all heard the quote “practice makes perfect”, but does it really? If you golf or have ever played a musical instrument you may know otherwise. When golfers make a mistake or a musician doesn’t play a note correctly, usually they tell themselves not to do that again and, of course, they do it again the next time.
It is not that the person wanted to make the same mistake, but in practicing it incorrectly they have told their brain that is how to do it. Therefore if you practice something incorrectly you will then learn it incorrectly. A more accurate quote is actually “Practice makes habit!”
Throughout your day if you choose to practice eating healthy foods and snack on fruits and vegetables, then you will build that habit. However, if you always grab a candy bar at the vending machine on your way out of the office, then you are not very likely to build the habit of healthy eating.
As you go through the challenges of living a healthier life, watch the habits you are forming and keep practicing those that are going to be beneficial in the long run. Those pesky little bad habits will try to raise their ugly heads once in a while, but you can overcome them by saying “I’m not going to give you any attention since I’ve got a great new habit I’m practicing” and see just how quick that bad habit leaves for good!
Remember that practice makes habit and then begin to practice the good things!
