Schedule a Slow In Your Workout

When you think of doing a workout, what do you really think of? GO, GO, GO; lots of heavy breathing and sweat; running non-stop on the treadmill. These are all answers given to the above question. A workout doesn’t really have to be like that, though. Believe it or not research is finding workouts that have periods of decreased activity sandwiched between periods of accelerated activity to be most effective in making the body fit. This type of workout is called interval training because you are working out at different paces for different periods of time.

One of the most effective types of interval training is running paired with walking or jogging. You would run until you were exhausted and then go through a recovery phase while you were jogging or walking. You can also do high intensity aerobics for 2 minutes and then low intensity aerobics for 2 minutes. Aerobic videos are out there based on this principle. While you are recovering and exercising at a slower pace, your body is forced to recover under stress and gets fit quicker.

Some of the benefits to this type of training include burning more fat than just longer periods of exercise without breaks. Endurance increases with interval training. The cardiovascular system is also conditioned to be healthier and that is a huge benefit. This type of exercise can also decrease the time you need to spend exercising while still giving you benefits from the workout. Just the time factor alone should give you the urge to try this type of exercise!

Interval training has been shown to increase fitness in as little as two weeks. Now that is something we can all consider as great!

The benefits of general exercise on overall health.

Heart health: Exercise provides your heart the ability to pump more blood with every beat and sustain its maximum level with less strain reducing your risk for heart problems.

Stress: Exercise reduces stress levels by bringing the stress chemicals produced in the body to the organs that will break them down for elimination.

Breathing: Exercise will allow your lungs capacity to handle more air intake so your blood can carry around more oxygen to the organs that need it.

Muscles: Exercising will strengthen and tone your muscles while increasing flexibility.

Figure: Exercising will give you a better figure overall and that is sometimes our best motivating factor!
