Trigger points
Posted Sunday, 13 December 2009 By Sashay
It is comforting to know that I can turn to you, Dr Hendricksen, for real and clear answers and help without the disbelief or unhelpful guidance I have gotten from other many other professionals.
Although I had been to many "specialists" for fibromyalga, without exception, I would be given a prescription and told to exercise more. Sometimes I would be sent for physical therapy without result.
You were the only one (including the physical therapists) who told me about this painful malady and encouraged me as I worked through them using the techniques you taught me. It is a great feeling to know I have a degree of control and that on the other side of trigger point release is much welcome relief.
It sure works for me!
Irritable Bowel

What exactly is "irritable bowel?" I have trouble with bouncing between constipation and diarrhea. I have always related it to medication but a lot of my friends who have fibro say it is fibromyalgia. What are your thoughts on this matter?

Irritable Bowel means that the bowels aren't functioning properly. Many individuals who suffer with fibromyalgia also suffer with irritable bowel syndrome.
It is possible and you are correct about your medications causing the irritable bowel syndrome. In order to find out, you either need to talk to your doctor, or pharmacist, or just read the fine print that comes with each one of your medications. Those sheets will tell you all of the adverse side effects that the prescription can potentially give you.
Explaining to others

How do I explain this pain to people so they understand? I have a high tolerance for pain but this is just overwhelming me.

Because it is a difficult subject, for most people to get through, Leaving Fibromyalgia Behind(TM) talks about this extensively. Friends, Family and other loved ones need very clear communication when it comes to fibromyalgia, but they don't really understand so it may take a while to get it right!
Meds and weight

Do all meds make you gain weight? I am so afraid of gaining more weight. I quit smoking and gained 20 pounds which I am struggling to lose and can't......now I'm afraid of gaining even more!

Congratulations on quitting smoking!!! What a wonderful accomplishment. Don't worry as much about the 20 pounds as you should praise yourself for your great accomplishment.
Not all meds make you gain weight. The best way to find out is to read the sheet with the fine print on it when you get your prescription. It'll tell you what adverse side effects are possible.
Approximately 25% of individuals taking anti-depressants gain weight. Also, Lyrica is known to cause weight gain.
The best way to overcome this is to handle your fibromyalia from a position of lifestyle changes (like quitting smoking :)) and work on your diet and exercise, both of which are covered step by step in Leaving Fibromyalgia Behind (TM). Good luck to you.
Meds and cold

Is it the medication that makes me feel cold all the time?

Medication can be a culprit in feeling cold all the time, but you really might want to consider getting your thyroid and its associated glands checked to make sure they are functioning properly. Talk to your doctor about checking your thyroid levels and possibly adjusting your meds accordingly.
Depression help.

What do I do to avoid getting depressed? I am starting medication to reduce the pain but the meds make me drowsy so I can't do much of anything else.
It seems I just sit and wait for the day to be over so I can take my meds and go to bed!!
